The proton

The quarks carry charges that are fractions of the elementary charge e. Up-quarks: +2/3; down-quarks: -1/3. The same thing is true for the quarks in the other two families. The proton (uud) therefore gets the charge 2/3 + 2/3 - 1/3 = +1.
