HCAL is composed of 24 sectors in the forward and backward regions and
24 sectors in the barrel region. It is constructed from several layers of steel
plates with track detectors (drift chambers) in between. The original particle
interacts in the heavy material and produces showers of particles that are
detected in the track detectors. The total number of produced particles is a
measure of the energy of the original particle.
