The eight baryons in the lightest baryon octet grouped after the quantum numbers baryon number, strangeness and charge.

Most particles are not elementary but built by other particles -- the quarks (Gell-Mann, Néeman and Zweig 1962-64). The heavy particles (baryons) such as the neutron, proton, S etc consist of three quarks.
