The eight mesons in the lightest meson octet grouped after the quantum numbers strangeness and charge.

During the 40's a new group of particles were discovered in the cosmic radiation, the mesons. The had short life times, the neutral K-meson had for example a life time of 10^-10 s and the charged p-mesons had a life time of 10^-8 s
