Rutherford used a beam of alfa-particles. They had a momenta of a few MeV/c and with them he could explore distances down to 10-12 m. When the alfa-particles collided with a thin gold foil, he discovered that they, sometimes, scattered at a surprisingly big angle. He had discovered the nucleus of the atom. Almost all the mass of the atom and positive charge is located in the nucleus.
