At the Inter-university Institute for High Energies or the IIHE (ULB-VUB) we study elementary particles and their interactions. For that purpose we use large particle accelators like those at CERN ( Switzerland ) and DESY ( Germany ), or cosmic rays. The institute participates in several international experiments: AMANDA/ICECUBE , CHORUS ,  CMS , DELPHI , H1 and OPERA . The “Dienst voor Elementaire Deeltjes”, which is part of the IIHE, belongs to the Physics Departement of the “Vrije Universiteit Brussel”. As a spin-off activity our group is involved in the development and construction of medical scanners of the PET and PEM type. This is done within the framework of the international Crystal-Clear Collaboration of which the spokesperson is member of our group.
